Feeling Hot! Hot! Hot!
Hey everyone,
As you all know, the weather has been unseasonably hot this past week. Boot camp workouts are intense enough, but add to that 95 degree weather and high humidity and you can have a pretty rough time for those that aren't prepared. Here are some things you can do to keep from overheating at boot camp:
- Hydrate yourself.
The rule of thumb is that the average, non-exercising person should be
consuming 1/2 oz. of water for every lb. of bodyweight they are
carrying. All of you boot campers should be drinking 1.5 to 2 times the
prescribed amount, not including water you should be consuming during a
workout (20 oz. per hour). Do the math and I'm sure you'll be stepping
up your current H2O intake. Important note: DO NOT DRINK ICE WATER while working out. Your body cannot metabolize it quickly and it can cause cramping!
- Eat well, but not too soon before a workout. Be sure to be eating every 3-4 hours, but make sure you don't eat a full-size meal within a couple of hours of boot camp. A small snack that will not sit in your stomach is okay about an hour or so before working out.
- Dress appropriately. Wear the least amount of clothing you feel comfortable wearing. Also, the more breathable your clothing, the better. A great place to shop for some great wickable athletic attire is lululemon athletica on N. Highland Ave. in Va-Highland. Ask for JJ and tell them you are with Fitness Battalion Boot Camp.
- Do your homework and do it outside whenever possible. Don't make boot camp class the only days you get out in the heat to work out. Stay consistent throughout the week and you will condition your body to deal with the workouts throughout the summer.
